EAN is a joint venture between Inmarsat (now Viasat) and Deutsche Telekom. The system uses a combination of ground based LTE and satellite connectivity.

80% of the time social media is just increasingly bad slop created to generate clicks/views/engagement. 10% is people screaming into the void, the last 10% might be valuable content. The Internet was better when we all hanged around in big and small web forums and group chats. To this day the most interesting conversations I see and participate in happens in forums and on group chats.

I notice that on Discord, even in "servers" (which aren't servers) that are allegedly about technical topics, it seems like at least 3 out of every 4 messages are slop - low effort irrelevant memes etc. For example there's a cat gif labeled "repost this cat after a substantial delay" and people just post that for no reason, then other people reply with the same gif. And there's no algorithm in Discord - it's an IRC-style chatroom platform - it's real humans posting and engaging with slop because it triggers dopamine or something, somehow.

We got pre-calculated returns as an alternative in the early 90's, by the time I got my first real job in the early 00's everyone used the pre-calculated one and just made changes as necessary. The first years I got my tax return in the mail and I think a few years I had to mail back a signed copy, but these days everything is digital and if you don't have to make any changes you don't have to do anything at all.

Back then you also had to physically deliver your tax deduction card to your employer so they could deduct tax correctly, but these days that is also digital and salary systems just fetches the current deduction card before running salary jobs every month.

Yet somehow the desires of the population is fulfilled to a higher degree in authoritarian China than in the beacon of democracy USA.

This uh valiant defense of China misses my point entirely. People in democracies have no excuse hiding their personal responsibility behind flawed leadership.

By the same token, hiding comprehensively broken and undemocratic governance behind "it's the publics' fault, because they get to vote for one of two candidates owned by wealthy donors every 2 years" is the opposite of useful.

This phenomenon is not limited to the United States, the trend is global including many parliamentary republics.

And most people know that captains of civilian vessels have good navigational and maritime education and have worked their way up, especially on big ships like tankers, while the navy is full of 20 years old cowboys.

Commercial shipping has its fair share of cowboys, too.

I've dropped my iPhone 12 a million times with no screen protection or cover. Still fine apart from some scratches around the edges.

Don't they have rain coats in London? :-)

I had the VW e-golf a while, and it was a super car. Never had any problems with it. Sold it to buy a VW Multivan (I think it's marketed as California in the US?) which also was a great car, but it was over 10 years old so obviously had a few relatively minor issues, but all in all happy with it.

California is basically the Camping variant of the earlier t3 and nowadays multivan (t7). It has a big history and used different frames (t4-t5) in the past. But it’s not a us thing. The first version was really close to a us only Model tough.

Insane that there's a market for a dude with a lawn mower these days when you can get a good enough robot mower for $1000 ...

Good enough for what? I'd love to have a lawn mower which can dump grass clippings in my compost pile (mulching them and leaving them behind is better for the lawn, I know, but my wife is allergic to grass so this would basically mean she never gets to use the lawn). Also, we have two apple trees which spend a few months dropping apples on the lawn, so I'd like to have a robot lawn mower which can pick up the apples and toss them in the compost pile too. Oh, and there's a gate separating the front yard from the back yard, so it would be great if it can open and close the gate.

Robot lawn mowers are getting better, but I have yet to see one which can handle every situation that humans routinely handle.

From people I know that have used Ozempic/Wegovy, the side effects are basically that they get a bit nauseated a few hours after an injection. That's it.
