I like how I started years ago by saying “Notepad sucks, let me try Notepad++ and Sublime Text”.

Now it’s almost an IDE, but still a great text editor!



Notepad is on every system


I can’t seem to find it on my Mac :)

Joking aside, even if it were on every system, I don’t see it having much use outside of the very, very rare edit in a system that isn’t my own.


The last I saw inside a Mac was around the time the Lisa was being developed. Did they ever get right click to work?

Textedit would be the Mac version.


I find it hard to believe anyone would use Notepad past the “wow I can edit this HTML file” phase. I found PSPad years before I started working.


Note the "years ago" part. Options were limited for non terminal free/cheap options for a long time.

Wiki says PSPad came out in 2001, I'd guess this experience predated that.


In 1999, I made a Starcraft blog entirely in Notepad. There may have been other options at the time but my download speed was < 28k in rural Tennessee.
