CD Projekt Red’s stolen Cyberpunk 2077 and Witcher 3 source code leaked (vg247.com)

From the 'ransom note' [0] the original attacker seems to be rather immature.

The current attempt to monetize this data by launching a platform for leaks also seems to be similarly immature.

I remember reading a comment addressing the co-founder of a startup attempting to sell code from a defunct business that said code by itself is more or less worthless. Most people who buy code are either getting something bespoke or actually buying something else (talent, service, contacts, customers, etc.).

> Interestingly, the note the hackers left alongside this announcement said that some of the other more sensitive data, such as company reports, NDAs, HR documents and such “are shared with the media”, but won’t be publicly leaked.

This seems to be something meatier. I wonder what they plan to do with it...perhaps it's a bluff?

Seems of limited use considering Unreal Engine's source code is available, and UE is probably a better engine and also legal to use in your games (albeit only for a percent of royalties).

The time when game sources were a major competitive advantage ended roughly around the start of the iPhone era, not just because of more source availability but also a shift towards cross-platform maintenance, live support, and high fidelity assets as the things that distinguish large productions.

Like, you still get "asset flip" games that copy default projects, but they are background noise. Having the source to something large like CDPR's games doesn't mean you have access to the studio infrastructure of CDPR.

I dunno about that. The failure of UT could not have been parlayed into the runaway success of Fortnite without Epic’s ability to redirect the engine being constructed to their new needs.

By and large I suppose I agree with you.

I mean, it's not about the engine, it's about the fact that it's a whole game.

Are there any games similar to Cyberpunk 2077 or the Witcher that use Unreal Engine? I assume game companies are not making their own engines for fun.

Deus Ex, a first person immersive sim with a lot of similarities to Cyberpunk 2077, used Unreal Engine. The more recent games in the series were a different engine.

To be fair, Deus Ex is nowhere near the scope and complexity of Cyberpunk 2077

They pay a hefty license if they choose to use third party middleware/engines. Perhaps CD Projekt Red are in danger of having features cloned etc.

The Outer Worlds

Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order

Final Fantasy 7 Remake

Days Gone

Code Vein

Played TOW, FF7R and DG. Yes all are games, but that's about it. They don't compare to each other, let alone to Cyberpunk 2077. Lets go with TOW as it is the only first person game. How can you compare the dialogues in CP 2077, where you can walk away and move around to those fixed camera frames of TOW?
