I think all Audiophiles recognise there are severely diminishing returns, but they pursue it because it's a hobby.
What they actually need to realise is that there's no magic in computers, and sometimes digital systems are literally identical as long as they aren't erroring. For example, copying over a network has integrity checks at several levels, so you can't receive a different version of the music.
