Looking at Python, when you take a language that was originally designed around dynamic typing and then bolt static typing on top, the result is just awkward all around, and ends up being the worst of both worlds.

PHP for what it's worth has actually done a pretty good job with its type system.

Yes it’s really good (it’s not awkward at all) and it’s optional if you don’t want to use it. It’s truly the best of both worlds.
