I'm still rocking my 3GS from 2008 in large part because of the case I had on it for 75% of its life. Phones get dropped.

Anecdotal counter-point: I'm also still rocking my 3GS, but I've never used a case. Of course I also don't drop it much (maybe 15-20 times total?).
